THE
HARBOUR
"
A love of harbours may stem
from our early explorations of
space, made from the security
of a parent's enclosing arms.
Protected on three sides but
wide open to the fourth, the
adult laps we may have sat in
as children were very much like
harbours to us. Physically a
harbour is found wherever an
area protects one part of the
world from the rest. In landscape
and architectural terms, the
valley, copse, fence-in yard
or garden, all offer a 'circle
of safety' from which to view
the outside world."
